ASMARA (Reuters) - The United States has intensified its criticism of Eritrea, saying the Red Sea state systematically abuses human rights and is a destabilizing influence in the Horn of Africa.

In an electronic media presentation held by four Eritrean opposition leaders at the “Eritrea for all Eritreans” paltalk room on 5 March 2010, chairman of the Eritrean People’s Democratic Party (EPDP), Mr. Woldeyesus Ammar, called for massive international demonstrations by all Eritreans and their friends against the abuses of the dictatorial regime in Asmara.

90% of Eritrean asylum-seekers are men, many of whom fled indefinite compulsory military duty.  Eritreans constitute by far the largest population of asylum-seekers in Israel, according to the United Nations high commissioner for refugees.

We are glad we were offered this golden opportunity to be part of this search for peace. We are here to learn how to give peace a chance. In the end our nascent organization will have gained more from this gathering than it can contribute. We are willing to listen and grow from this experience.

How sure are we that the conference will craft a national vision when EDA itself is not unified?  How national can the conference be if all member organizations and others who should be integral part of the process are not included?

Reports coming out of Eritrea indicate that the government continues to incarcerate thousands of Christian prisoners who refuse to seize practicing their faith in accordance to a government ban in place since May 2002.

The flow of Eritrean refugees to Northern Ethiopia and Eastern Sudan keeps growing every week. In February (11-22/2/10), 1,239 Eritreans are reported to have left the country and fled to the neighboring countries of Sudan and Ethiopia.

Beating and tying up the prisoners was a normal daily phenomenon. While making us work hard labour or while herding us outside to relieve our wastes, they used to beat us stating the prisoners did not behave according to the orders and instructions of the officers.
