90% of Eritrean asylum-seekers are men, many of whom fled indefinite compulsory military duty. Eritreans constitute by far the largest population of asylum-seekers in Israel, according to the United Nations high commissioner for refugees.

The flow of Eritrean refugees to Northern Ethiopia and Eastern Sudan keeps growing every week. In February (11-22/2/10), 1,239 Eritreans are reported to have left the country and fled to the neighboring countries of Sudan and Ethiopia.

Beating and tying up the prisoners was a normal daily phenomenon. While making us work hard labour or while herding us outside to relieve our wastes, they used to beat us stating the prisoners did not behave according to the orders and instructions of the officers.

Ledia Tewelde sobs as she arrives at the spot where three people apparently jumped from the 15th floor of a block of flats in Glasgow. She understands how they may have felt, because last year she jumped out of a flat window as the pressure of being an asylum seeker became too much for her.
